A useful technique

Use of 'throw' is essential in advanced Billiards. It is often mistaken for transmitted side; a totally separate thing. Throw occurs when side is used and the cue ball hits the object ball. In this case the object ball does not travel quite along the line joining the centres of the the two balls, it throws to the opposite direction to the side that was used.

Potting

The most useful aspect of 'throw' is to straighten a pot. By playing a slightly off-straight pot with side, you are able to aim full ball.

Distance

Unless you are very proficient at this technique and your cueing is very accurate, use it for short distances only.
